Apeks claim LAN trophy at Tipsport Bratislava Cup

The European mixture lived up to the favorites tag at the ~$45,000 event.

Apeks lifted the trophy in Bratislava, Slovakia, with a near-flawless run at their first LAN event. The team ranked 29th in the world beat ECLOT 16-9 and Enterprise 2-1 in the group stage to secure a playoff spot, and looked comfortable in the bracket play with 2-0 wins over eSuba and SINNERS to lift the trophy.

The title and ~$22,000 first-place prize come as a consolation for Apeks, who showed some good results since coming together in January, but fell short of qualifying for the BLAST Spring Showdown or earning an all-important spot at the Europe RMR.

Despite a positive COVID test, STYKO played out the event

Apeks' campaign was made more difficult after the group stage as Martin "⁠STYKO⁠" Styk tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the playoff matches. While the Slovakian was unable to compete on the stage and in front of his home crowd, the organizers allowed him to compete with the team from the backstage area — and he delivered.

Across the event, he was Apeks' tied-best performer alongside Tim "⁠nawwk⁠" Jonasson with a 1.22 rating, while Tomáš "⁠oskar⁠" Šťastný's replacement David "⁠forsyy⁠" Bílý was the standout for SINNERS, who reached the grand final from the other side of the bracket.

Ultimately, it was the more experienced and favored side that came out on top, Apeks taking a 16-8 on Nuke and 16-12 on Overpass and forcing SINNERS to settle for a second-place finish.
